Open SmartPAL from your course in Canvas — sign in with your usual campus credentials. You can also download the iOS or Android app and log in with the same Canvas account for help on the go. The app is optional; Canvas works in your browser.
ChatGPT and similar tools answer from the open web with no connection to your course. SmartPAL is grounded in your course — your syllabus, materials, deadlines, and announcements — so answers are tied to what you are actually learning, not random internet content.
No. SmartPAL is a learning support tool — it helps you understand course material, stay organized, and prepare for assignments. It is not a substitute for doing your own work. Follow your instructor’s course policies on when AI tools are allowed, especially on exams and graded assessments.
Yes. SmartPAL is free for students enrolled in courses that use it — your institution or instructor covers the cost.
Your individual chat messages and prompts are not shared with instructors as transcripts. Instructors may see aggregate engagement signals — such as whether you are using SmartPAL and broad activity levels — to support the class, not the content of your conversations. See our Privacy Policy for details.
